For anyone trying to watch your carb intake.. these mini burgers are perfect!

Ingredients:
-99% lean ground turkey (seasoned with sea salt & pepper)
-tomato
-1/4 cup fat free shredded cheddar cheese *or regular of you need fats
-avocado*optional if you need more fats
-low sugar ketchup
-mustard

25 Protein

1/5th avocado sliced on would add in some healthy fats!

I like to enjoy bun-less burgers so that my side dish can be some kind of carb source.  I chose a baked potato but my other favorite choice would be whole wheat bread with butter spray & garlic then toasted in the oven!

His & Hers: Healthy Easter Gift Basket

Easter will be here before we know it so I thought of a few things you could get for the health conscious person this year!

There is no reason we need to fill a basket full of chocolate and candy (even though it is good).  Most people have the mindset "Oh it's just once a year, I can eat this chocolate/candy/bad food"... well no, it's Easter, May Day, 4th of July, state fairs, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Eve, Valentines Day and many others.  By doing this, it creates a pretty big habit for individuals to continue on with bad habits throughout the entire year. Now you wonder why you can't keep off the weight you work so hard to lose time after time?  We need to start creating healthier habits for ourselves AND teach them to children and adolescents.

I have created a quick Easter basket filled with alternative ideas to share with you! Feel free to add your ideas in the comment section as well :) Men, this is a great list for any female in your life so take note!! :)

Chocolate Maple PB Cups

Happy St. Patties Day! Hope you're all wearing GREEN!

Who doesn't love Peanut butter cups? But we all know they are not the healthiest for you.  I had been wanting to create my own recipe to make a healthy version so I finally gave it a try!  Anyone can have them, as long as you fit them into your daily macros (carbs, fats and protein).

This was my first experiment so it's a work in progress but they turned out amazing so I thought I'd share :)  The recipe makes 19 and they are only ~53 calories each!

You will need:
-Mini muffin tin
-Mini muffin cups
-2T Peanut butter (I used Smuckers natural creamy)
-2 Scoop/40g Protein Powder (I used Micellar Creme Vanilla)
-7T Dark Chocolate chips (I used Hersheys special dark)
-2T Better n' butter peanut butter
-2T Walden farms maple syrup
-Sea Salt (*Optional)

Process:

  1. Line the muffin tin with cups
  2. Have 1/2 protein powder mixed and ready
  3. Melt 1/2 dark chocolate
  4. Mix chocolate and protein powder
  5. Drop into cups filling 1/4
  6. Put in freezer for 10 min
  7. Mix Peanut butter, better n' butter, maple syrup
  8. Melt and mix other half of protein and chocolate
  9. Drop Peanut butter mix into each cup
  10. Pour the rest of the Chocolate and Protein mix on top of cups filling 3/4 full
  11. Sprinkle Sea salt on top (*Optional)
  12. Put in freezer for 20 minutes
  13. ENJOY and share if you wish! :)

**I keep mine in the freezer, make sure to take it out for a minute before eating so the lining doesn't stick to the chocolate when unwrapping!

Advocare 24-Day Challenge Explained!

Many of you have been hearing more and more about the Advocare 24-Day Challenge..  What is it?

Well first of all, the Challenge comes in a customizable bundle with two phases (Cleanse and Max).

Day 1-10 (Phase One) Cleanse-  In this phase, you are using the first ten days to detox your body and prepare it for better absorption of nutrients which will take place in the second phase.  Many people will start to lose weight in this phase.  I like to call it "an oil change for the body".
During the cleanse phase you focus on eating a whole and healthy diet consisting of complex carbs, lean meats, fruits and veggies.  The challenge also gives you a daily guide to help you through the challenge. it includes charts as well as nutrition tips to follow. You can access that HERE

Products included during Phase One:
-Herbal Cleanse in Citrus or Peaches and Cream (I prefer peaches and cream) detoxes body
-Omega Plex- Includes your essential Omega-3 fatty acids, plays role in transportation of nutrients and blood flow, supports healthy blood pressure and metabolism.
-SPARK- nutritional energy drink filled with vitamins (Mango Strawberry is my favorite flavor!)

Day 11-24 (Phase Two) Max- In this phase, you give your body the best tools for weight loss or management. By this phase, you should start to feel a lot better.. just wait because the changes will keep coming!  Focus on a healthy diet, smaller meals, more water, no alcohol, less caffeine, no processed foods for the best results.

Go straight to my site & order yours here!

You can customize yours by deciding between MNS Max C (appetite control), MAX E (energy enhancer), MAX 3 (Combination of the two).  I usually suggest C because SPARK gives a good amount of energy.

Products included during Phase Two:
-MNS Max Packs- MNS 3, C, or E
-Meal Replacement Shakes (I've only tried mocha chocolate so far and LOVED it! so flavorful! Also available in Berry, Chocolate, Vanilla or Vegetarian Dark Chocolate)
-SPARK (Flavors include Grape, Mango Strawberry, Citrus, Fruit Punch, Mandarin orange, Cherry, Watermelon and Pink lemonade)
-OmegaPlex

Yes, I did the challenge right before going to Vegas last year and starting my competition prep!  I lost 6 pounds and 6 inches all over.  I felt great AND kept it off even through vacation! Would I do it again? Of course! I just don't need to as I am prepping and cutting for competitions already!

My Personal Results from the 24-Day Challenge

What products do you recommend to add to the Challenge?

Discovering my Love for Fitness

How did I become so into fitness?

It was almost two years ago when I first started getting into fitness.  In reality, I was trying to find who I am supposed to be. (Still trying to, I think it is an ongoing process!)  After many years of people telling me "You're too skinny", "You're weak", "You aren't strong enough for that", I wanted to prove so many people wrong as well as the thoughts in my head.  This is what made me turn to fitness and lifting.  I did a TON of research to find out if this is something I would really like to put all of my time and effort into.  I researched trainers, diets, competitions, all of the costs (bikini, tan, registration, travel, supplements, posing lessons), lastly, went to a couple of local competitions to experience it from the crowd.. I knew right away I wanted to work my butt off to get on stage!

Since my beginning two years ago, I have competed in two Bikini division body building competitions (which I NEVER thought I could do!) I placed 2nd in both which I was absolutely thrilled!

I'm still a beginner but I can tell you I love the process and seeing different transformations throughout the year.  There have been many struggles such as gaining weight from binging after my competitions (I had no idea what I was doing.. I was on such a low calorie & strict diet throughout prep so I craved everything imaginable!) but I love where I am now.

Currently, I am training with Team Gorman, my prep coach is Leslie Franklin and I love my new team!  I am using IIFYM (If it fits your macros) which I will cover more about in a future post.  I do want to say my prep is going great and I am staying sane this time! :)

Follow my journey as I am 9.5 weeks out from my first competition of 2014 in Des Moines at the Hoyt Sherman!

Thanks for viewing, I am just getting this back up and running and can't wait to share all of my ideas and experiences with each of you!

DIY Old tee's into workout wear!

I hope everyone had a great holiday break and have been able to get back into the swing of a normal routine!

Do you ever wonder what to do with all of your old tee shirts? If you are like me, I have way too many from the last ten years!  I decided to make a lot of mine that I don't use anymore into cut-offs to workout in.  There are lots of different ways to 'cut' the shirt just the way you want!  I only like to workout in tank tops or cut offs because I get way too hot!

Here are a few ways I decided to cut my new workout shirts :)

I crave pancakes quite often so I have started making a healthy version of pancakes! You can modify any part of the recipe to your liking but here is my recipe...
-2 Egg whites
-1/4 Cup vanilla almond milk
-1/4 cup Old fashion oats (gluten free for me)
-1 tsp vanilla extract
-1 tsp baking soda
-3 TBSP flax seed meal
-1/8 cup brown rice flour

**Then I mix it all in a blender or with a hand mixer (to blend well & break the oats up)

Pictured, I have topped my pancakes with Chocolate hazelnut butter and some maple agave nectar! Super easy and takes less than 10 minutes :)

You can find at Hy-Vee or Target, there are sample packets, too! :)

I tried this workout on Sunday and I was super sore for a few days.  I am trying to be able to do pull ups on my own so here's what I did..
-Hold a pull up position at the top with wrists facing you for 10 seconds.
-Rest 20 seconds and repeat 4 more times
NEXT
-Standing on a box, I did 'pull up jumps' with wrists facing out, hands about 6 inches out from shoulders on each side
-I would jump up from the box using mostly my arms and hold a the top for a half of a second for 15 reps
-Rest 20-30 seconds and repeat 4 more times

Your lats should be a GOOD SORE tomorrow!  Enjoy :)

Step/box & the pull up bar I used
Hand position for the jump-pull up
Stand on box, feet centered so you don't fall off!

In December, I did a fitness photo shoot with my sister in law, Ashley-she's the best! We had a lot of fun and survived the freezing cold out in the snow for a whole 45 minutes! :)
Make sure you go to her Facebook-  www.facebook.com/ashleylawsondesign and 'like' her page, see what should could do for you! She is a graphic designer with an extremely creative mind!

H20-Do you Know?

How do you know if you are getting the right amount of water your body needs?

Well, lets start with the recommended amount of cups per day.  Yes, the standard is 8 cups of water per day but everyone really needs different amounts.  The best baseline is to drink at least half of your body weight in ounces. (150 lb person should drink 75 ounces).  Exercise also changes the amount required by your body.. if you workout more and sweat out a lot of water then of course you are going to need to replace the lost water!

Since our bodies are made up of 55-70% of water, it's very important to make sure we are taking in enough.  Every day, our bodies need to replace 2.4 liters of water.
Urine should ALWAYS be a very light yellow-clear color.

What may happen if you don't get enough water::

1. Weight gain/increased amount of body fat
2. Poor muscle tone
3. Digestive complications
4. Increased muscle soreness
5. Muscle cramps
6. Irregular blood pressure
7. Kidney problems
8. Dry skin
9. Lowered levels of concentration

Did you know, The average human loses 250mL of water just by breathing?

Benefits of drinking water::

1.  Prevention of dehydration- even the slightest bit of dehydration can decrease one's mental focus and energy levels as well as increase stress found throughout the body.
2. Promote weight loss- Helps relieve bloating (water retention). Zero calories, reduces hunger.
3. Help regulate body temperature- Sweat is produced during high temperatures or workouts to cool your internal organs.  Therefore, lack of water reduces the amount of sweat.
4. Aid in digestion- Helps metabolize and breakdown proteins. Our kidneys need more water to help flush out by-products which are produced during protein metabolism.
5. Increase muscle tone- Drinking water can improve hyperaemia which is also known as "the pump".  Lean muscle tissue is made up of 70% water found within blood plasma (the clear, liquid part of our blood) By increasing water intake, it causes your blood to become more voluminous which results in a bigger "pump" and makes your muscles look more full!  Water overall helps keep our muscles in an anabolic state (muscle building).  Water carries oxygen to your body- muscles need oxygen.
6. Act as a lubricant for joints- Creates easier and more powerful muscle contractions.  Makes more of a cushion rather than feeling of stiff joints.
7. Transport nutrients- Water helps transport vital nutrients that are used in energy production
8. Helps you focus- Drinking water can increase your cognitive function. Your brain needs oxygen in order to function properly and at its' optimum level! By drinking 8-10 cups of water per day, your levels of cognitive performance can improve by up to 30%!

Here are my tips on increasing the amount of water you intake each day to make sure you are getting as much as your body needs!

-Carry a water bottle every day (preferably with ounces lines marked out for easy measure)
-Take a drink at every water fountain you pass by throughout the day, go out of your way too!
-Incorporate at least one glass of water into your morning and evening routines
-Make reminders for yourself to drink water every couple of hours
-Set a goal each day of how many ounces of water to drink (mine is 100 ounces/day)
-When you think you're hungry, drink one full glass of water and wait twenty minutes

Signs of Dehydration
1. Thirst
2. Dry, sticky mouth
3. Tiredness, fatigue or weakness
4. Decreased urine output
5. Constipation
6. Headache, lightheaded or dizziness
7. Loss of appetite
8. Dry skin

Brain made up of 90%
Bones made up of 22 % water
Blood made up of 83% water

 Workout of the week::
Treadmill incline sprints
-I usually set a goal of how many sprints I would like to complete and push myself to finish every one of them!
-For me, the workout is usually around 20 minutes, depending on how much time and energy I have left in my workout.
-I sprint for about 10-25 seconds, depending on the incline level and speed!
-Sometimes, I will do something in between each sprint (box jumps, ab exercises or different body weight exercises) and other times, I will just walk on the treadmill for 45-60 seconds to lower my heart rate back down.
Here's my workout partner, Jes and myself doing incline treadmill sprints!
